Institute for Senior Scholars

Lifelong Learning Program Overview

The Institute for Senior Scholars is a year-round lifelong learning program sponsored by the Office of Conferences and Institutes in the Division of Continuing Education at Appalachian State University. ISS provides a rich learning experience at a modest cost for its members through a diverse variety of intellectual, cultural, outdoor, and social programs. More than 100 events are scheduled throughout the year. ISS is designed for participants 50 and older who are retired or partially retired and who share with their peers a love of lifelong learning. Most instructors are retired or current ASU faculty or ISS members.

The curriculum includes clasSenior Scholars on fall hikeses, which are noncredit, from eight subject areas:

•  Art, Music, and Drama
•  Religion, Spirituality, and Philosophy
•  History and Social Science
•  Math, Science, and Technology
•  Language and Literature
•  Health and Well-Being
•  Social and Political Issues
•  Contemporary Living

ISS programs also include hikes, canoe trips, museum trips, theatre trips, field trips, and social events. A computer users' group and a book discussion group both meet once a month. Most programs are held at the Broyhill Inn & Conference Center, which provides ample free parking and handicapped access.
